Barbara (Babz) Johnston is a multiple Dora nominated performer, writer, director and choreographer. She is best known for her onstage persona “BABZ’; the host of multiple ‘one woman PLUS special guests’ variety shows including the annual Holiday spectacular “JINGLE BABZ & FRIENDS” and the critically acclaimed “BUBBLE BABZ: Songs from the Tub”. She is an active writer in the Canadian musical theatre scene; collaborating on multiple projects with some of the country’s most prolific Dora Award Winning writers: Anika Johnson, Suzy Wilde and Nick Green.

Barbara has choreographed for hit TV shows ‘Ginny & Georgia’ and ‘Orphan Black’ and choreographed/assistant directed the Canadian premiere of the critically-acclaimed musical Dr. Silver: A Celebration of Life (The Musical Stage Company/Outside the March).

Beyond her work in musical theatre and TV/film, Barbara is known for being a co-founder/director of WANNABE: A Spice Girls Tribute where has toured as Ginger Spice; performing to sold out shows across the globe for over a decade. She fronts country band ‘Love Hurts’ and portrays Gwen Stefani in the No Doubt Tribute band ‘Spiderwebs’.

At Performance Studio, we believe that when immersed in the fun of learning to sing, dance, act, and perform together as a group, something amazing happens: creativity flourishes, courage and confidence grow, collaboration and connection to friends and community are fostered and thrive. Through drama games, vocal training, dance choreography, creative movement, staging, and a whole lot of FUN, our students will build both performing arts skills and confidence to last a lifetime.

We are currently offering two classes: Primary (grades 1-3) and Junior (grades 4-6).

Barbara has worked extensively in arts education for the past 15 years teaching privately as well as coaching, staging/choreographing, choral conducting, writing at/for multiple renowned Canadian arts institutions including Wexford School for the Arts, Theatre Sheridan’s ‘The Canadian Musical Theatre Project’ (CMTP), The Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Annex Children’s Theatre in Education (ACTE) and Lakeshore Arts. She runs a private music studio offering private coaching in voice/vocal performance, piano and musical theatre audition prep.

Barbara is a passionate teacher who approaches every lesson with thoughtfulness, energy, and care.

Pilates and Yoga

Barbara is a certified pilates instructor and movement teacher who’s classes draw on technique/elements of many movement modalities. She’s been told her classes are “challenging", “specific" and "really fun".

Barbara teaches regularly at Mosaic Yoga in Toronto.
